DSAGSL ~ MINI CONFERENCE MARCH 25 & 26!

The mission of the DSAGSL is to benefit the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families through individual and family support, education, public awareness and advocacy.    You may have received the first "What's UP at the DSAGSL" at your home.  We are very excited about our upcoming Mini Conference Series, but some updates have been made to the registration form.  The updated form is located below. The DSAGSL staff Who Should Attend?  These workshops are appropriate for ALL parents, educators, family members, paraprofessionals, medical professionals and therapists who interact with students who have Down syndrome. Practical Solutions for Potty Training & Elopement in Children with Down Syndrome  Friday, March 25  6:00-9:00pm at Special School District Central Office 12110 Clayton Road Rooms 60 & 61 Town & Country, MO 63131 $10 Individual/$15 Couple Space is limited  -  Refreshments included Registration begins at 5:30pm Children/Students with Down syndrome can be potty trained in just four short days if you utilize the tips and techniques shared in this session. Likewise, you can also learn effective strategies for stopping a child from running and creating an emergency response plan that works in case the unthinkable happens. This session will cover various scenarios where elopement can be high risk and what you can do to teach the core behavior of staying near an adult at all times.  Practical Solutions for Educating Students with Down Syndrome  Saturday, March 26  9:00am-3:00pm at Maryville University Auditorium 650 Maryville University Drive St. Louis, MO 63141 $15 Individual/$25 Couple Boxed lunch included Registration begins at 8:15am Over 5,000 parents and educators across the country have attended this workshop and rated it highly. Designed to help you understand how to successfully engage, instruct and enjoy your student with Down syndrome, this workshop will provide an overview of the specific learning needs characteristic of students with Down syndrome. Tips, strategies and solutions relevant to preschool through high school will be covered.  Topics include:  How to improve student/child communication How to motivate your student/child towards independence The right placement with the right schedule How to change behavior Simple approaches to adapting curriculum How to build a productive parent/school partnership  .5 Continuing Education Units are available for this session through the University of Missouri - St. Louis.  CEU forms will be handed out at the conference and collected at the end of the session with your $15 fee. Now, start your own petition Dear Shawn, Victory! After two months of campaigning, your voice was heard -- along with that of 17,000 other Change.org members.Etsy, the online marketplace, has removed offensive greeting cards that mocked rape survivors, parents of kids with Down syndrome, and breast cancer patients. Even better, Etsy has changed its internal policies as a result of your activism: Previously, Etsy specified that their site had "prohibited disparaging or promoting hate against people based on race or religion." Now, that policy also includes gender, sexual orientation, and people with disabilities. Don't stop now. I had the opportunity to meet Elizabeth, Lillian and her brother at the parent meeting on Thursday and want to welcome them into our group! Lillian is 3 months old, super cute, and quite a mover and a shaker!

ST. Charles DS Group Family Fun Night Invite!

Adrienne from the St. Charles DS Group extended us an invite to their FAMILY NIGHT! 

Please RSVP with her if your family is able to attend! It's sure to be a blast!

We are having a FAMILY NIGHT on Friday, January 14th at Jump 4 Fun. It will be from 6:30 to 8:30 PM and FREE for your family. This is an RSVP'd event so I NEED either an email or call me @ 636-751-8388 to RSVP. Ideally I need RSVP's by Jan 7th but can make exceptions. I just need to let them know how many are coming in a timely manner because I pay based on that.

 

This is FAMILY event so bring your babies, toddlers and big kids! :) Everyone can enjoy Jump 4 Fun, even the parents!!!  This is a great way to connect with other parents so please consider coming. Let's get a good turnout!
